Lady Jay VB Season Opener

On Tuesday, the competition season began for the High School Volleyball squads in a split location.  Varsity girls played on the campus of Belle Plaine High School while the Junior Varsity girls welcome opposition on their home court in Caldwell.   In attendance were the Belle Plaine Dragons, the Medicine Lodge Indians and the Chaparral Roadrunners.

On the JV side, headed by Coach Emily Harding, the girls were anxious and definitely had a lot of jitters to work out.  Those participating were Lucy Schneider, Tori Lewellen, Precious Struble, Hailee Agresto, Sonya Cooper, Livia Dvorak,Courtney Hall,  Jenna Sturm, Nikki Shafer, Emma Sturm, Kylie Townsend, and Angel Majors.  A rocky start of 0-3 on the first night out, but Coach Harding commented on how they improved as the night advanced.

Led by Coach Berline, the varsity girls entered the Dragons facility with high hopes.  In the first match against the home team, the girls clearly struggled to get things going and seemed a little stunned.   Belle Plaine had some offensive weapons in several hitters.   “It was a good wake up for us.   No doubt, Belle Plaine was ready.   They are a good team, ” commented Coach.

This ended in a loss 11-25, 13-25

With some quick line-up changes, the Lady Jays moved on to compete against Chaparral.   Kill percentage improved and serve receive did also.   They rebounded and achieved the first win on the season doing it in two sets.  25-21, 25-20

On to the final match of the evening, the girls faced Medicine Lodge who had beaten Chaparral in three close sets earlier in the evening.  Serving errors and defense became a little bit of a struggle for our girls but held close to them nearly winning the second set.   16-25, 23-25  Varsity ended the night 1-2.  Participants included:   Paytn Dvorak, Sammie Strnad, Megg Lebeda, Katie Townsend, Tylyn Ward, Katie Jo Schmidt, Kassidy Bruey, Sophee Sprague, Ivy Berline, and Delaney Mayo.

The girls and coaches look forward to their next play date at Pretty Prairie High School where they will also face Cunningham next Tuesday.
